Pay Gets Pinched

For the annual IT Salary Survey done by InformationWeek, 12,410 IT professionals responded and the findings are interesting.

As InformationWeek reports, in areas such as Detroit, Los Angeles and New York, IT employees didn’t get a raise. Meanwhile, back in Washington, the median increase was 2.9%. Investment banking suffer, earning $12,000 less in 2009, while biotech’s pay is increasing.

“Across the country, IT staffers report a median increase in total compensation – salary and cash bonuses – of just 0.7%, with IT managers receiving a 1.6% increase. Last year, raises were almost 3% and 4%, respectively. Median compensation reported by IT staffers is $80,000; for IT managers, it's $105,000”, says InformationWeek

Saving Face on Facebook

Imagine being considered for a promotion and going to your boss to talk about it, only to find: your best friend, your worst enemy, your aunt and uncle and all your little cousins, your college drinking buddies, your colleagues from jobs past, your current co-workers, your high school sweetheart, and a bunch of people you’ve never formally met, all in your boss’ office, waiting to help decide your fate…

Worried? The truth is, there is a time and place for everything, and a meeting about a possible promotion should be kept separate from your personal life. This all seems like common sense but it’s exactly what many people are doing on Facebook these days: mixing business with pleasure; personal lives with careers and some are paying the consequences.

Most people on Facebook are so concerned with their friends “scorecard” that they don’t think about the “oil and water” combination they’re trying to force to mix on their profile. Then, they start talking smack about the people at work or share stories about their private life that normally they would rather die than have certain people find out and yet they turn it into a public announcement over the world wide web.

Having the wrong information get in the hands of the wrong people in your personal life can cause a storm to brew but having that happen with your co-workers could prove to be nothing short of a natural disaster.

Our advice: don’t share so much on the web and stick to the old-fashioned ways of not mixing your work and your personal life or your IT career will suffer tremendously. To read an article about this topic, see ComputerWorld.

Are you contemplating getting your certification but aren’t sure which route to take to achieve your goal? Take it from someone who just passed their CCNP exam:

Cisco CCNP Course
I have just passed my first CCNP Exam (Routing) after using the online course from CBT Direct.

The training material was easy to use. Like the MCSE course I bought from CBT Direct, the format of diagrams, text and questions in the CCNP course made the process of learning and understanding the subject easier than studying with a book. Plus, the course wasn't as expensive or as time consuming as instructor-led training. I would recommend CBT Direct's courses to anyone wishing to study technical subjects.

My contact at CBT Direct was extremely helpful when I called to find out about the course. He made it possible for me to purchase the course in easy payments without stretching my cash flow. He was able to answer all the queries I had and took a genuine interest in what I was trying to achieve and how best to do it.

Thanks for your help and understanding.

We thought we’d take a look at iPhone Apps, since honestly, besides the Swine Flu, what else is really going on in the world?

Trivial Pursuit - The oldie but goodie board game is now available at your fingertips to practice before you challenge your friends or family members at the real thing. We are competitive by nature and love to test what we know, so there is nothing better than a mean game of testing our knowledge with history, movies and the biggest, baddest neon pink fads of the ‘80s.

Doodle Jump - This game is kind of like Space Invaders but your objective is to jump to the highest spot in the universe. It’s the perfect “get-away-from-it-all-and-don’t-think-about-anything” kind of game. When you want to think, try Trivial. When you don’t, try this.

Mock Draft - Not happy with your favorite team’s draft picks this year? Think you could’ve done better, right? With Mock Draft, it’s your chance to test your decision skills by becoming the general manager and scouting the up-and-coming college football players for a team all your own.
